TheFantasyBookcase · 4/22/2026 · 3 min read

Hello fellow book dragons!

Today we are talking about how to photograph your beautiful editions before posting them for sale on our marketplace. Just like yourself (I'm assuming), buyers are not only buying a title, they are buying a piece of art for their shelves! Condition, clarity, and honesty matter.

Here at BookHeart we want to get these beloved editions into the hands of readers who will cherish them. In this simple, easy-to-follow guide we will give sellers some tips on how to photograph your books to attract buyers.

Lighting - Your Secret Weapon

Lighting is the key to taking good pictures. Natural light works the best when trying to show off the true colors of a book.

Your best setup:

  • Near a window or another natural source of indirect sunlight

  • During mid-morning or late-afternoon

Things to avoid:

  • Overhead lights, or yellow lighting

  • Direct sunlight

Pro-tip - Take your photographs near a bright window with your interior lights turned off.

Background - Clean & Neutral

Buyers want to see the book - and the best way to show it off is to give it its own stage.

The best backgrounds:

  • A white poster board (a classic, and cheap)

  • A neutral-colored blanket

  • A clean desk, or clean bookshelf

Things to avoid:

  • Busy patterns

  • Distracting objects

  • The floor (if possible)

A simple background will let your book take center stage!

Show All Angles

Buyers want to see the whole book, and all of its gorgeous features. Remember to take photos of all of its angles.

Features to Photograph:

  • Front Cover

  • Back Cover

  • Spine

  • Top, bottom, and side edges

  • End papers (especially if they are custom designed)

  • Inside title page (for first editions and signed copies)

  • Any other special features

  • Any flaws (dents, scratches, smudges, tears, etc.)

Don't be afraid to take 6-10 photos. More photos = buyers feeling fully informed about what they are purchasing.

Focus on Special Edition Features

BookHeart users are here for the beautiful edges, custom covers, and unique detailing. When shooting your photos be sure to highlight these features.

Foil Stamping

  • Tilt the book slightly until the foil catches the light, snap your photo then

Sprayed/Stenciled Edges

  • Hold the book upright and shoot straight on

  • Take an up-close to show detail & condition (optional)

Embossing/Debossing

  • Use side lighting to reveal these details

Shots like these will make your listing stand out!

Optional Extras

We've touched on the most important tips. Now for some extras that might push your listing right into our buyers' carts.

  • Clean the Book Before Shooting - This one is a simple, but often skipped, step. A microfiber cloth works wonders to remove dust, fingerprints, and smudges on glossy covers.

  • Keep Your Camera Steady - Use both hands, or a tripod to avoid blurriness. Using your phones gridlines will help keep the photo straight.

  • Add a Size Reference - Use your hand to hold the book or place it next to other books on a clean shelf, to help buyers visualize its size.

Better photos don't just make your listing look nicer - they build trust with buyers, highlight the book's special features, and help with sales. And remember, each sale you make only adds money to your BookHeart Wallet to use for future purchases. It's a win-win friends.
