Lighting - Your Secret Weapon

Lighting is the key to taking good pictures. Natural light works the best when trying to show off the true colors of a book.

Your best setup:

Near a window or another natural source of indirect sunlight
During mid-morning or late-afternoon

Things to avoid:

Overhead lights, or yellow lighting
Direct sunlight

Background - Clean & Neutral

Buyers want to see the book - and the best way to show it off is to give it its own stage.

The best backgrounds:

A white poster board (a classic, and cheap)
A neutral-colored blanket
A clean desk, or clean bookshelf

Things to avoid:

Busy patterns
Distracting objects
The floor (if possible)

A simple background will let your book take center stage!

Show All Angles

Buyers want to see the whole book, and all of its gorgeous features. Remember to take photos of all of its angles.

Features to Photograph:

Front Cover
Back Cover
Spine
Top, bottom, and side edges
End papers (especially if they are custom designed)
Inside title page (for first editions and signed copies)
Any other special features
Any flaws (dents, scratches, smudges, tears, etc.)

Don't be afraid to take 6-10 photos. More photos = buyers feeling fully informed about what they are purchasing.
